All you need to know before having Implant Supported Dentures
What are implant-supported dentures?
A Dental implant is a titanium fixture placed in the jawbone to act as a tooth root, the implant and bone fuse together, a process called osseointegration. An implant can be used to provide support for a crown, bridge, or denture. Minuk Denture Clinic has been treating denture wearers in Winnipeg with dental implants since 1987!
An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to two or more implants. It is usually made for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable there. However, you can receive an implant-supported denture in either the upper or lower jaw.
Here are three types of Implant Supported Dentures:
Bar-retained Over-Dentures: The denture is held in place by being attached to a bar which is secured to 2 or more implants. This treatment is very secure and stable.
Ball/ Locator Retained Over-Dentures: The Dentures with sockets snap into the balls/ locators placed on the gum line. Your denture is removable.
All-on-4: Whether you are dealing with the headache of loose dentures or are looking for an option to replace your failing natural teeth, All-on-4 implants could be a good option for you.
All-on-4 dental implants also referred to as, teeth-in-a-day, permanently replaced a full arch using 4- 6 precisely placed implants and a dental bridge. The process allows for the total rehabilitation of upper and or lower arches, closely replicating the function of your natural teeth. This is something you simply cannot acquire with a removable denture.
With its high success rate, accessibility, and close, the All-on-4 has become one of the most popular treatment options offered for full arch restoration.
Benefits of All-on-4
*Eat what you want, when you want. (there is no upper palate allowing you to taste more of your food)
*Restores lost facial support associated with bone and tooth loss.
* Improved quality of life and well-being.
* Eliminates the need for denture adhesive while eliminating sores.
Why have the procedure done?
Dental Implants are the only real solution for loose lower dentures. Unlike an upper denture, a lower denture has no suction and relies heavily on the bone structure it sits upon. If a denture wearer has little jaw bone, the lower denture is not likely to stay put. Two or more implants are placed which assures your denture will stay in place. This will reduce sore spots and discomfort. If your denture is in good condition, your denturist can retrofit your denture to the implants or, we will make you a new denture.
Ill-fitting dentures can cause irritation, discomfort, and sores. With implant-supported dentures, these issues are almost nonexistent because your denture will remain firmly in place. Dentures typically need to be replaced every 5-7 years.
Jawbone recession can drastically change your facial appearance. Being without teeth can cause the mouth to over-close thereby creating a “sunken-in’ appearance on the face. With dental implants, you not only help preserve your jaw bone but the denture on implants will support your facial structure.
What about traditional dentures?
Traditional dentures are often felt to be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Denture wearers often complain of discomfort, embarrassment, and dissatisfaction with their appearance. Over time wearing dentures can cause bone and gum loss as they do not stimulate jaw bone.
Properly fitted dentures and dentures that are supported by dental implants are more convenient. Dentures supported by implants act as natural teeth to stimulate the bone and prevent bone loss. They also stay put and do not slip out of place. You’ll be to eat all the foods you like!
Misconceptions about Dental Implants
Fear of Surgery
Some people feel anxious at the thought of undergoing any sort of dental treatment let alone surgery but what they don’t realize is how quick and easy the procedure is. Once you are determined to be a candidate for implants, the surgery is no more uncomfortable than having a regular tooth extraction.
Lack of understanding
Dental implants are the next best thing to healthy natural dentition. The implant acts as a tooth root and preserves your bone.
Length of Treatment
While your implants integrate into your bone, our Denturists will fabricate a temporary denture that rests on top. Once you are healed, we will create your final denture that is attached to the implants. Since all mouths are different, healing time may vary. Typically from start to finish, you’ll have your permanent teeth inserted within 6-8 months.
How much do Dental Implants cost?
Dental implants cost more but if they are properly cared for and maintained, they can last many years! Traditional dentures are less costly but due to bone loss, they are required to be replaced every 5-7 years and relined every 2-3, not to mention the use of denture adhesive. These costs add up.
