How to Fix Broken Dentures
1. Collect any pieces of your broken denture and any stone models your Denturist may have given you when your denture was made (this will save both time and money).
2. Contact a Denture Specialist – Things happen, stay calm and call our support staff here at Minuk & Koster Denture Clinic. Our team will book a free consultation for you as soon as possible. Your Denturist is knowledgeable and fluent in all denture emergencies and can repair or replace your denture quickly.
Did you know most denture repairs can be fixed while you wait? Our lab is in-house, therefore allowing you to get back to your life sooner! In some cases, a friend or loved one will bring in a broken denture from someone who may be homebound or unable to attend the clinic in person. Your Denturist will be able to assess the broken denture to see if it can be repaired without you or if you are needed in person (this is where the stone models will be important to bring).
Common reasons why Dentures break
A broken denture is usually a good indication that the denture is not fitting/functioning properly.
1. Accidental Damage: You’ve dropped your denture in the sink or on the floor
2. Wear over time: Inserting and removing your dentures (partials), failing to come in for yearly appointments, and required fittings, using abrasive cleaners, and the general age of your denture.
3. Improper Fit: your mouth is constantly changing over time due to bone resorption and or possible weight loss.
Our Denturists at Minuk & Koster Denture Clinic recommend Denture Relines every 2-3 years, and Replacement Dentures every 5-7 years.
Can you repair your Denture?
We’ve experienced what occurs when clients try to repair their own dentures. It ends up being more difficult and more expensive to repair. We highly discourage clients from trying to repair their own dentures. Clients simply do not have the tools and materials required to do a proper denture repair.
Denture repairs are specifically handled by both Denturists and Lab Technicians who have extensive training in how to handle lab materials in a safe, controlled environment. Over-the-counter glues or adhesives may be toxic if consumed having. Having these ingredients in your mouth could be detrimental to your health.
While some stores or the internet sell “Denture Repair Kits”, those are not always effective, are meant only as a temporary fix, and frequently are not Health Canada Approved. Fixing your denture yourself may also void any warranty that is in place. It is always best to leave it to the professionals.
Cost for Denture Repairs
If applicable, your dentures warranty may cover your repair. If you have dental insurance, we can send a pre-authorization to your insurance company to find out how much your policy would cover. In cases in which we cannot pre-authorize ahead of time or we do not receive an immediate response, you will be responsible for the cost. Our Support Staff would then send the claim to your insurance company and make the claim payable to the policyholder. All costs related to your repair will be explained to you prior to proceeding.
Tips to prevent breakage
1. Storage: When not wearing your denture it is important to store them properly. Keep dentures in room temperature water in an air-tight container. This will protect them from drying out, knocking them over, or household pets from chewing them.
2. Be gentle: When cleaning your dentures, be sure to do so over a clean washcloth or towel. This way if they are dropped, they have a soft landing.
3. Yearly check-up: Yearly check-ups are imperative to both your oral health and the life of your denture. Seeing your Denturist here at Minuk & Koster Denture Clinic yearly will allow them to inspect your dentures, address any questions or concerns you may have, and keep your warranty ( if applicable) valid.
At Minuk & Koster Denture Clinic, we offer a Digital Scan of your Complete Denture. A digital scan is taken of your denture and stored in our computer. In the event of any denture emergency, we can simply 3D Print or Mill you a new one.
