What Are The Different Types of Denture Fit?
The fit of a denture is generally the result of the amount of bone remaining in your mouth. Over time, the bone in your mouth shrinks. The three factors that determine the fit of your denture include retention, support, and stability. How do these characteristics influence the fit of your denture?
Retention
Is the dentures resistant to movement from the supporting tissues. This can happen naturally due to eating, drinking, and talking. Dentures stay in place if the seal that is created between the gums and the dentures is secure. Usually, upper dentures do not present the same troubles as a lower denture simply due to the fact that the upper palate and your saliva work together to keep it in place. A lower denture relies heavily on the support and stability of the lower jaw bone.
A proper initial impression when fabricating your new dentures is extremely important. Without an accurate impression, there will be no seal and your denture will not fit properly from the get-go. Denturists are specifically trained in taking impressions and calculating measurements of your mouth to ensure the best fit possible.
Support
Support refers to the ability of a denture to resist displacement by functional stresses. Functional stresses include eating, drinking, talking, and bruxism (teeth grinding). Properly fabricated dentures are supposed to rest evenly on both the gums and palate. Poor supporting dentures present many problems when you bite down. If the fitting surface of the denture is uneven this can cause rocking. Dentures that rock can cause tissue damage, sores, and rapid, irregular jaw bone loss.
Stability
If a denture is not stable you will not be able to chew or talk effectively which, will impact your overall health and confidence. What causes a denture to be unstable? Biological factors such as deteriorating bone loss and poor neuromuscular (relating to nerves and muscles) control can play a huge part. Ill-fitting dentures will also contribute to this issue. In some cases, denture adhesive or dental implants may be used to provide more stability.
